A new form of folk festival is the festival (“sagra”), the typical products of a place are cooked in different ways and they are offered to the tourists for few euros. It is also a good way to know the Calabrian cookery. These festivals are animated by the so called “giganti”, they two paper mache giantpuppets that dance in the main square of the town. They are moved by two men who are inside them. At the end of this fest there are pulled many crackers. The typical Calabrian dance is the “tarantella” or the so called dance of “mamma, li turchi”. It remembers the Turkish invasion, that brought in Calabria a big fear and terror. Before this “sagra” there is always a religious procession and a mass in honor of the town’s patron saint. In the Easter period are made many processions to remember Jesus’ suffering when he was crucified. One of the most remarkable procession is made in Nocera Terinese, it is called the “Vattienti” they are men that hit themselves with a brush made up of nails until they bleed. Another important day is the 15th August, in this day is honored the Assumption Madonna and the Calabrian people spend their time with the family and friends at the seaside or in mountain.
