Under the slopes of Mount Consolino lies the medieval town of Stilo (2800 inhabitants). In the distance you can see the small Byzantine church, which is known as “La Cattolica”. This church dominates the whole town and dates back to the tenth century. It was built as a “katholikón”, as the main church of a monastery. The elegant building in the red brick has five cylindrical tambours which rest on four columns from Caulonia and inside this building there are some important remains of frescoes on the walls. Crossing the beautiful historic centre to the east, you can reach the church of San Domenico. Stilo also was the hometown of the utopian philosopher Tommaso Campanella.
